Cost of Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Test

If you’re experiencing difficulties conceiving, it’s crucial to ensure the health and functionality of your ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes. Ovaries produce eggs, fallopian tubes transport them to the uterus, and the uterus nurtures fertilized eggs during pregnancy.

HSG, or Hysterosalpingogram, is a diagnostic test for female fertility. It’s typically performed without hospital admission. During the procedure, an iodine-based dye is introduced through the cervix, followed by a series of X-rays to assess the uterus’s shape and size and to check for blockages in the fallopian tubes. HSG is recommended in cases of infertility or recurrent miscarriages.

Preparing for the HSG Test

  • Consult a fertility specialist for the HSG test.
  • Check with your insurance company as some plans may cover the cost.
  • The HCG test is usually conducted between the 5th and 9th day of the menstrual cycle. Women with irregular cycles may need a pregnancy test before the HSG.
  • Inform the physician about any allergies, including iodine, betadine, or Novocaine.
  • Take an anti-inflammatory pain medication an hour or two before the procedure to alleviate post-test cramping.
  • Check with your doctor about the need for antibiotics to prevent infection.
  • Bring a sanitary napkin as there may be dye leakage.
  • Wear comfortable clothing rather than tight-fitting attire.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the test.

How the HSG Test is Performed

  1. A contrast medium or dye is introduced into the uterus and fallopian tubes to make them visible on X-rays.
  2. The patient lies on her back, and a speculum is inserted into the vagina to keep it open, providing clear access to the cervix.
  3. Local anesthesia is applied to the cervix.
  4. The contrast medium is injected either through a cannula or a plastic tube with a small balloon to stabilize the uterus.
  5. X-ray images are captured.

What to Expect After the HSG Test

After the procedure, patients may experience:

  • Sticky vaginal discharge, possibly with traces of blood (carry a sanitary pad).
  • Vaginal bleeding, dizziness, fainting, and cramps.
  • Common risks include vomiting, heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, abdominal pain, and a pungent odor from vaginal discharge.

Pain During the HSG Test

Typically, there is no pain when the dye passes through the uterus and fallopian tubes. However, if the tubes are blocked, there may be pressure and pain. Inform the doctor if you experience pain; the catheter may need to be removed. Taking pain medication before the procedure can help reduce cramping.
